3-Day Beijing Itinerary
A realistic first-time route that balances imperial landmarks, the Great Wall, hutongs, and food without overpacking each day.
Day 1: Imperial Beijing
Keep this day focused. The Forbidden City is larger than it looks on a map, and the best way to avoid disappointment is to enter early, move through the main axis first, and save Jingshan for the reward view afterward.
- Book the Forbidden City early and enter at opening time.
- Climb Jingshan Park afterward for the classic palace view.
- Walk or ride through nearby hutongs in the late afternoon, but do not force every lane into the route.
- Have Peking duck for dinner if you want a classic first-night meal.
Day 2: Great Wall Day — The One That Tests You
Choose Badaling for convenience or Mutianyu for scenery, but treat this as a full-day commitment. The Wall is rewarding, yet transport, walking, crowds, and weather can quietly eat more time than expected. Fair warning: The Great Wall day will kick your legs if you're not used to stairs. I learned this the hard way.
- Leave central Beijing early, especially if you choose Mutianyu.
- Bring water, sun protection, and grippy shoes; the Wall is not a casual one-hour stop.
- Keep the evening light: return to the city, hydrate, and rest.
Day 3: Temples, Parks & Hutongs
Use the final day for a slower local-feeling route. This is the day to stop checking boxes and let the city breathe a little.
- Visit Temple of Heaven in the morning for park life and paid structures.
- Add the National Museum only if you reserved a slot and still have museum energy.
- End with Shichahai or Nanluoguxiang for hutong atmosphere, food, and an easy final evening.
How to Use This Itinerary
These routes are designed to reduce backtracking and avoid overpacking each day. In Beijing, the biggest time savers are advance booking, early starts, and choosing the right Great Wall section for your energy level. If the weather is poor, move museums and covered food stops forward and leave parks for a clearer day.
