From Our Visit

I'll be honest — the National Museum is overwhelming. It's one of the largest museums in the world, and trying to see everything is a recipe for museum fatigue. My advice: pick one section (the Ancient China hall is the best choice) and give it your full attention. The rest will still be there next time.

The Ancient China hall on the ground floor is where the museum really shines. Walking through it is like flipping through a 5,000-year textbook, except the exhibits are real — you'll see oracle bones from the Shang dynasty, a jade burial suit from the Han dynasty, and Tang dynasty唐三彩 figures that still have their glaze intact after 1,300 years. I spent two hours in just that one hall and didn't even see everything.

One tip I wish I'd known: The museum's cafes are expensive and average. Grab a baozi or a sandwich from a convenience store on your way in — there's a small seating area near the entrance where you can eat quickly between sections.
