Mutianyu Great Wall
Mutianyu Great Wall visitor guide with official hours, ticket price, location, and planning tips for a scenic Beijing Wall visit.
Why Mutianyu, Not Badaling
Most first-time visitors default to Badaling because it's the name everyone knows. But after visiting both, I can tell you straight: Mutianyu gives you a better Great Wall experience — more scenic, fewer people, and way more fun. Set in the forested mountains of Huairou District, this section is fully restored but feels far less commercialized. The cable car ride lifts you over treetops that turn gold in autumn and deep green in summer, and the watchtowers along this stretch offer some of the best photo opportunities of any Beijing Wall section. Plus, there's a toboggan slide down the mountain. Yes, a toboggan.

From Our Visit
The cable car ride was my favorite part of the approach — dangling above the forest canopy as the Wall slowly revealed itself across the ridge. I got off at the top and just stood there for a minute, staring. Seeing the Wall snake over the green mountains without a sea of tourists in every direction was the experience I'd hoped for. I walked east along the wall for about an hour, passing through watchtowers where the only sound was the wind through the trees. Then came the toboggan. I'll be honest: I was skeptical about the toboggan — it felt touristy, like something tacked on for the Instagram crowd. But honestly, laughing my way down the mountain, pulling the brake lever through the curves with the wind in my face, was the highlight of my day. The track is about 1.5 km long and takes under five minutes, but it's pure joy. Bring a light jacket even in July — at 800 meters elevation, the mountain stays noticeably cooler than the city, and the breeze on the wall can catch you off guard.
