Great Wall near Beijing
Choose the right Beijing-area Great Wall section: Badaling, Mutianyu, Jinshanling, crowd levels, transport, and visitor planning.
Three Great Wall Sections, Three Different Experiences
Badaling is what you expect the Great Wall to look like — wide, restored, postcard-perfect, and heaving with people. It's the closest section to Beijing (about 70 km), the easiest to reach by public bus or train, and the most touristy. If you've never seen the Wall and only have a few hours, Badaling gets the job done. Just know you'll be sharing the experience with hundreds of other visitors, especially by mid-morning.
Mutianyu is what you hope the Great Wall will look like — same restored watchtowers and sweeping mountain views, but with half the crowds. It's further out (about 90 km) and requires more planning, but the forest setting, the cable car ride up, and the absurdly fun toboggan slide down make it the better choice for most travelers. This is my personal recommendation for a first-time visitor.
Jinshanling is what you imagine the Great Wall to be when you picture adventure — crumbling sections, steep climbs, almost no tourists, and views that stretch forever into the mountains. It's about 130 km from the city and best suited for experienced hikers who want to spend a full day (or overnight) on the Wall. Not for first-timers. Not for anyone with mobility concerns. But if you want to feel like you've truly walked a piece of history, this is the one.

What I Wish I Knew Before My First Wall Visit
- Go on a weekday and start early to avoid crowds.
- Bring water, sun protection, and shoes with grip.
- Do not combine the Great Wall with too many central Beijing sights on the same day.
- For first-time visitors, choose Badaling for easiest logistics or Mutianyu for scenery and cable-car options.
From Our Visit
I've visited all three sections multiple times, and they really are different worlds. My first trip was to Badaling on a sunny Saturday in April — I climbed the stairs among a sea of selfie sticks, and while the Wall itself was impressive, the experience felt more like a theme park than a historic site. A friend convinced me to try Mutianyu a year later, and I was blown away. The cable car ride rising over the forest gave me goosebumps — watching the Wall appear as a ribbon across the mountain ridges was the "wow" moment I'd wanted. And the toboggan ride down? I laughed so hard I almost forgot to brake. Last year I finally made it to Jinshanling with a hiking group. We walked for six hours on unrestored Wall where you had to watch every step, but the silence between watchtowers — broken only by the wind — was something I'll never forget. My honest breakdown: Mutianyu is the best all-rounder, Badaling wins for convenience, and Jinshanling is for the purists. Choose based on who you are, not based on photos.
